How To Deal With My Anger
What are the steps to controlling my anger? Is controlling anger a spiritual discipline? How do I conquer my anger? What can I do practically to deal with my anger?
This week on the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the topic of anger. Dr. Caldwell begins by saying that we need to realize that the Bible has a lot to say about anger, therefore it is an important issue. The Bible informs us of two different kinds of anger. Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “ Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.” This is righteous anger, an anger that we are to know, an anger that is rooted in the honor of God. It focuses on God and His Kingdom, His will, and desires, not on me and my kingdom, my perceived rights, and desires.
Yet even here we are cautioned and have to be careful because righteous anger can easily slip into sinful anger if we are not mindful and diligent. Due to our flesh and sinfulness, this is typically the kind of anger that we find ourselves dealing with. Sinful or unrighteous anger is proud anger that is self-centered and self-focused, it’s all about ME. The Bible describes this as dishonoring to God. Sinful anger is dangerous and destructive.
A Man of Great Anger Will Bear the Penalty
Dr. Caldwell shares Proverbs 19:19 which says, “A man of great anger will bear the penalty, for if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again.” He explains that the picture here is of someone getting into trouble due to their anger and it implies a repetitive kind of nature. He also shares Proverbs 22:24 which says, “Do not associate with a man given to anger, or go with a hot-tempered man.” This verse informs us that anger is such a dangerous issue that we are warned about keeping company with people who are characterized by it.
Dr. Caldwell tells us in order to begin dealing with our sinful anger, we need to begin with caring, understanding that it displeases and dishonors God, recognizing that it is sinful and that we don’t want to be characterized by something that is dangerous and by something that others would seek to avoid being around us.
Dr. Caldwell next references the New Testament where anger is shown as belonging to that which characterizes the old life. It’s actually one of the evidences of the activity of the flesh. Anger is a fleshy desire that is listed among the fruit of the flesh (Gal. 5:16-21). In comparison, that which characterizes a believer that is filled with the Spirit (new life) we see…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control at work (Gal. 5:22-23).
There are Certain Things that we are to Put Off
Dr. Caldwell explains that the Bible often describes our old life and our new life in terms of clothing; there are certain things that we are to put off and other things that we are to put on. If the Lord has saved us, He’s given us His Spirit, He has regenerated us, and made us new people. We need to see that we have been set free in Christ and in Christ, we now have the capacity to obey and put off and put to death these sinful actions, attitudes, behaviors, and emotions as we are commanded in Colossians 3:5-10.
Dealing with our anger becomes a choice. We choose to regard it and deal with it as God would have us to. The way we go about doing this is to be filled with the Spirit, submitted to Christ and submitted to the Word of God (Eph. 5 and Col. 3). These two go hand in hand. If I want to be filled with the Spirit I submit myself to the Word of God. As I submit myself to the Word of God I know the power of God’s Spirit at work in my life and this is evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit at work in my life.
Practical Help for the Believer who is Struggling With Anger
Dr. Caldwell goes on to offer some practical help for the believer who is struggling to put off sinful anger, and deal with it effectively. He reminds us that the battle begins in our own minds and thoughts. We need to humble ourselves before the Lord and realize that what we are dealing with is a pride issue. This sin has to be put to death. We want to care more about God’s honor and pleasure than our own. Putting to death our fleshly thoughts and desires that we would do what pleases and honors Him above all. Dr. Philpot makes the point that this is what Colossians 3:1 and 2 mean when we are told to set our minds on the things above. This is the context for making the right choices.
Dr. Caldwell says that the New Testament is consistent in its terms of processing truth and living it out. It always begins in our minds. We must have right thinking and right believing. We need to keep God in our thoughts, who He is, His character, what His commands to us are, and what His goals are for us. As 2 Corinthians 5:9 teaches, we are to have as our ambition always to be pleasing to the Lord in all that we say or do.
