Can a Christian be patriotic without falling into the trap of Christian nationalism? Pastor Richard Caldwell shares from the Scriptures to help shed clarity. He reminds us that our ultimate allegiance belongs to the King of Kings, but also that salvation does not destroy a right sense of gratitude for God’s common grace blessings.

Looking at Acts 17, we see that God establishes the boundaries of nations according to His sovereign plan. Proverbs 14:34 tells us that righteousness exalts a nation, so when we see this in our nation, we should give thanks. True prosperity of a nation is not measured by material wealth, but by moral sanity and biblical values. This is why the church must pray for our country and its leaders as commanded in Romans 13, and 1 Timothy 2. We need to look at the church and politics through a biblical lens, recognizing that human authority is instituted by God.

Many ask, “should the church be patriotic on Sunday?” While a worship service must remain strictly focused on Christ, acknowledging God’s historical mercies is completely appropriate. But what about a Christian’s civic duty, respect, and responsibilities? Is patriotism a sin if it becomes an idol? Can believers state the pledge of allegiance with a clear conscience? Pastor Caldwell answers these by establishing proper theological categories, explaining that we can remain devoted to our homeland country, as long as it never forces us to violate the authority of Scripture.

We recognize that the family of God is a multinational kingdom. Yet, loving your neighbor includes a distinct burden for the spiritual well-being of the nation where God has placed you. True national healing requires a national awakening, and our greatest need is the preaching of the gospel of grace. We must pray that our laws accord with God’s standards while keeping our eyes fixed on our true, everlasting home.
