The testing of your faith can reveal more than you think. Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about the testing of our faith when we’re feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by difficult circumstances?

Every believer will encounter unexpected hardships in their Christian walk. When these times arise, we often ask what is going on? Why is this happening? Are we being tempted? Or maybe we ask, is God testing us? If so, why does God test our faith? Through an exposition of verses from James 1, Pastor Richard Caldwell provides biblical guidance and wisdom on how to handle Christian trials. We learn that encountering various trials is an inevitable part of Christian living, and, that these challenges have a profound divine intention. God is sovereign over everything, and He orchestrates these events to test the genuineness of our faith and produce endurance.

Understanding the James 1 trials and temptations passage, is crucial for every Christian. So then, what does the Bible say about testing your faith? Pastor Caldwell explains there is a difference between the kinds of testing the Bible speaks of and how it speaks about tempting and temptation.  There are several places in Scripture where we are called to test and examine ourselves, but this is not what is spoken of here in James 1.

James, through the Holy Spirit, speaks of testing that comes from God. And, while God sovereignly brings tests and testing to build our faith, He never tempts us to sin. Temptation comes from Satan and our own fleshly desires. By recognizing this distinction, we can navigate hardships with a clear understanding of Gods purpose for our lives. We are called to cooperate with the Lord, trusting God in hard times to bring about a good result. (see also 1 Peter 1:1-9).

One of the most challenging commands in Scripture is to be rejoicing in suffering. However, this does not mean we fake happiness when we are hurting. Rather, finding joy in difficult times is rooted in knowing that God uses the pressure of these times to refine us. This knowledge and process is part of how we achieve spiritual maturity through trials. If we find ourselves lacking in understanding to make decisions in these times, we must seek God for direction. In this very same chapter, God tells us that He generously gives wisdom to those who ask in genuine faith (cf. James 1:5-7).

With Christian suffering explained through the lens of God’s Word, we see that enduring faith proves we truly belong to Christ. It is a comfort to know that true believers will persevere and not walk away from the Lord. We must learn how to endure hardship biblically by holding fast to the Word of God and refusing the devilish suggestions to abandon our faith and obedience. Let the testing of your faith result in true spiritual growth and a deeper love for the Savior.
