The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

Is the devil omnipresent? How much influence does he have on my sinful choices? How much influence does he have in our lives and in our spiritual battles?

This week on the Straight Truth Podcast Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the reality of spiritual warfare and how it must be battled by the Christian. Dr. Caldwell wants us to know that Satan is real, he is not omnipresent, but he is a very real foe and the greatest enemy that we face in the spiritual realm.  The devil is a schemer, we are not to be ignorant of his schemes nor of the ways he operates, the Bible informs us of this. However, Dr. Caldwell wants us to know that our battle is not just with the devil. We have sin battles that arise out of our flesh and we have sin battles that arise out of the world system, which of course is informed by Satan.

Something else we need to know is that Satan is not alone in the spiritual realm.  He is the leader of a force of foes that we face; there are demonic forces that we struggle against as well. There is some form of spiritual hierarchy that exists within the demon realm, we aren’t told by Scripture to try to figure it out; we are just told that it is.

Christians Cannot Come to do Spiritual Warfare With a Plastic Sword

Dr. Caldwell says Christians cannot come to the battle with a plastic sword or some imaginary weapons. He tells us that Ephesians 6 is a good passage to help us understand how we are to engage in this very real battle with very real weapons. Dr. Caldwell says if we are born again, we are exhorted by the Apostle Paul to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might”(Eph. 6:10). Paul tells us in the very next verse (6:11) to put on the armor of God; so here we see that God has provided what we need for the spiritual battle.

Paul uses the analogy of a soldiers military armor that we are to put on for use in this battle.  We are to put it on and make choices with what God has provided. And just as important, we have to know this armor is effective; Paul goes on to say, “so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”

So Paul takes up this analogy of us putting on this armor and being prepared for battle. Dr. Caldwell wants us to momentarily lay aside the analogy so that we can focus more intently on what each piece of the armor represents. Each piece that Paul describes is meant to present us with something real and substantive, not an analogy but reality. Dr. Caldwell takes the opportunity to teach us what the Bible says these are, and how we are to really do battle with the armor the Lord has provided. He walks us through Ephesians 6:10-14.

Our Battle Is Not really With or Against People

In doing so he also reminds us that while our battle is not really with or against people (flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12)), there is nowhere in the Scriptures that we are commanded to bind Satan, cast out demons, nor rebuke Satan. Yes, Satan has a role in our sinning, and the spiritual battle is real, but we want to use the weapons that the Bible tells us to take up. Taking these weapons and applying them, we are to walk in the power of Christ, the strength that He provides through His Spirit and have the force of biblical truth we need for victory. Then and only then will we be able to stand firm in the evil day when the temptations and battles come.
