Why Is There Evidence Of Evolution?
This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Richard Caldwell and host Dr. Josh Philpot tackle some questions brought by an individual who shares some skepticism of the creation account in the book of Genesis. The questioner states they find it hard to believe the universe as being created in six days. The individual states that they find the evidence presented by some of the best scientists overwhelmingly convincing. These being scientists across the spectrum as non-Christian, Christian, agnostic, and atheist. They want to know Dr. Caldwell’s take on this. They ask if the universe, including man, was created in six days, why did God make them in such a way that they appear old and aged? Why did God do that? Isn’t that disguising something from us when the universe and the earth seem to be billions of years old, but in reality, they are not?
First, Dr. Caldwell tells us that he takes some issues with the questions. He states that these questions present in such a way that assumes a consensus of the universe being billions of years old. Evolution is often presented in this way as if it’s a fact proven by science. The popular perception of evolutionary theory certainly does seem to be that it has already been proven beyond all doubt.
It Is Only A Theory
Yet evolutionary thought is just that; it is only a theory that is far from scientists reaching a consensus and being settled as fact. Many Christian scientists see evidence for a young earth, so not all scientists agree. You can search Google and the likes for all kinds of information on evolution looking to prove the position of an old earth. However, in those same places, you can find those who can defend the case for a young earth from the standpoint of science as well.
Second, Dr. Caldwell sees an idea present in the questioning that if the earth is young but has the appearance of age that it would be some means of deception or a cloaking. This line of thinking implies that what God has done was to set about fooling us into believing that the universe is really old when it’s not. Dr. Caldwell says that he thinks this is a really cynical way to view it. He tells us in-fact that he does believe God created the earth in six days because the Bible says so. The biblical book of Genesis presents the origins just this way. Anyone that would have been reading the creation account prior to the theory of evolution coming about would have understood it in very literal terms.
Dr. Caldwell pursues this talk of deception. He asks, how can we explain that for thousands of years, God’s people in Old Testament times read and believed what God said about the day cycle, expressed in Genesis by the words: morning and evening, day 1; morning and evening, day 2; and so on. Was that deception, were those people deceived?
God Has Given Us His Word
For God to make them, and us, believe that He brought everything into existence in six days and then rested on the seventh when in reality, that isn’t how it happened, that would be deception. That would make God a liar, and that’s inconsistent with His character as revealed throughout the Scriptures. Numbers 23:19a tells us clearly that God is not a man that He should lie. God has given us His Word; He tells us what took place and that He did it. He spoke creation into existence, and He formed the man, Adam, of the dust of the earth. In each case, everything created in those days, including Adam, was made in a mature state, ready to go, fully able to function as God intended.
We need to follow this up with the New Testament teachings. In the New Testament, we see that it assumes the reality and literalness of the Old Testament account. The New Testament explains that sin and its consequence, death, have their origin in Adam’s disobedience. By this one man’s singular act of disobedience, all things have come to be as they are. Dr. Caldwell reminds us that the New Testament ties the work of Christ, the last Adam, our Savior, and our Redeemer to the Genesis account of the first Adam. Evolution undermines the gospel of Jesus Christ.
If the first part is not true, we would have every reason to suspect the second part would not be true either. If what the Bible teaches about creations origins are not true, then we have nothing on which we can really rest our faith. So the right place to stand is that we would rest our life and our eternity on the Words of God, and we will find them to be true.
